Simon Berman, Richard Keys Data Made Flesh

Opening: Tuesday 27 September, 6-8pm Dates: 27 September-15 October 2011

‘Data Made Flesh’ is a new media installation piece that seeks to bring the binary command-codes that govern so much of the contemporary world to life, by exteriorising and aestheticising the central digital coding-elements that drive the work, and translating them into various media which play out across various sites.

‘Data Made Flesh’ employs various ubiquitous new media technologies and re-purposes them to create a unique interactive experience. The piece is centred around the use of QR codes, which when photographed by the user/audience members (via their smartphones) redirect their phone web browsers to an animated audio-visual piece. These web based elements have been created by a process of generative synthesis driven by the raw binary data present in the code itself.

An extended network of ‘Data Made Flesh’ QR codes have been spread across the city’s streets, which alongside the wall mounted codes in the gallery dynamically affect the projected animation in the exhibition when scanned. In such a way, the work creates a sphere of interaction which extends beyond the gallery walls and out into the city.

Simon Berman specialises in Audio Visual Installation, Animation and Sonic Art which focusses on using technology as a means of referencing psychological and social patterns. Lately he has been exploring metal work and projection.

Richard Keys has an academic background in Media Studies, and a creative background in experimental music. He has recently started to use the media-arts as a forum to explore his ideas regarding media, information theory, semiotics etc which were previously confined to paper.
