Eliza Hutchison Family Photos B

Opening: Wednesday 31 August, 6-8pm Dates: 31 August - 17 September 2016

‘Family Photos B’ is part of the Hutchison’s exploration into photography’s indexical relation to human experience. Using an idiosyncratic data bank of personal and cultural images, the work is conceived much like poetry and reconfigured through a process of reflection and re-photographing. The photographic processes highlight the latent content of original images, while being a recognition of the inaccessibility of another person’s consciousness, while keying into a collective yet diverse lexicon of perceptual readings. Hutchison explores the idea of visual representation of as an illusive history of experience that is essentially illusory, deceptive and fundamentally unstable.

Eliza Hutchison was born in Johannesburg, South Africa and lives in works in Melbourne. Hutchison was educated at RMIT, where she studied film, sculpture and photography. She has worked as an educator in Art and Design and Art Theory at RMIT and Swinburne, Melbourne. Hutchison has exhibited in numerous exhibitions throughout Australia and Asia, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography and Asian Biennale, Centre for Contemporary Photography, National Gallery of Victoria, Heide Museum of Modern Art, Balnaves Contemporary and the Art Gallery of NSW.

Her current interest lies in exploring materiality and abstract aesthetics in the photographic image.

Eliza Hutchison is represented by Murray White Room, Melbourne.

This project is supported by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.
