Lee Mullen On-shore Off-shore

Opening: Wednesday 20 May, 6-8pm Dates: 20 May – 6 June 2015

‘On-shore Off-shore’ considers the complex relationship between Australia and its South Pacific neighbor Nauru, through material, spatial and temporal search enquiries beginning with Nauru House (located at 80 Collins Street, Melbourne).

Attempting to see through a filter bubble of contemporary urban idealism, and explore narratives of utopia and abstraction, the artist challenges her own engagement with notions of sovereignty, foreign ownership, asylum seeker policy and resource development.

Reflecting on the role of formal and social abstraction within a current cultural singularity of art, design and commerce, Lee Mullen’s site integrative practice explores temporal and spatial anxieties, social tensions and visual communication. Lee completed post-graduate studies at VCA in 2013.
