Exhibits,

Emile Zile, Annika Koops Surface Creep

Opening: Wednesday 2 October, 6-8pm Dates: 2 Oct - 26 Oct

Shimmering over the surfaces of rendered shapes, a creeping inertia draws. A dead space with living breath, embalmed under a layer of moisture. Without meat eyes, we see perfectly. Operating at a dank frequency we twitch and preen, meticulous agents.

Emile Zile is an artist, filmmaker and performer. In his darkly comic re-encodings of media broadcasts, communication protocols and online platforms his work reflects a distributed humanity, a yearning for transcendence and the limits of language. Building on a background of live and single-channel video, his work utilises site-specific performance, portraiture and filmmaking to capture the traces of humanity within an accelerating digital culture.

Performances in 2018/19 include Becoming the Icon (performance development) with Lilian Steiner at Arts House North Melbourne, Audience/Performer/Lens (after Dan Graham) at Brunswick Mechanics Institute and Liquid Cooled at This Image is No Longer Available 2018 Modern Art Oxford, Oxford.

Emile received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from RMIT Media Arts Melbourne before relocating to Amsterdam in 2007 to commence an MFA degree at the Sandberg Institute. In 2012 he began a two year studio residency at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Amsterdam supported by a Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds scholarship. In 2018 he commenced full-time practice-based doctoral research at Digital Ethnography Research Centre, Department of Media and Communication RMIT Melbourne.

His work is profiled in Australiana to Zeitgeist: an A to Z of Australian Contemporary Art 2017 Thames and Hudson and The Routledge Companion to Mobile Media Art 2020.

Annika Koops is a Melbourne based artist working primarily between painting and digital media. Her images consider how subjectivity may be distilled and reformatted in the digital realm. Recent post-photographic work charts the porosity of boundaries between online and offline persona and objects and spaces whose existence is primarily virtual. 3D models that signify traces of human presence are employed within her work to explore the hermetically sealed reverie of CGI and the ethereal ontological status of the objects within it.

Annika has been the recipient of several significant grants and prizes including the Australia Council for the Arts British School, Rome Residency, The Keith and Elisabeth Murdoch Traveling Fellowship, Australia Council New Work Grant and an Australian Postgraduate Award. She has been invited to participate in international exhibitions such as Roman Remains, Transition Gallery, London and the inaugural Bristol Biennial as well as having exhibited at a range of public institutions, artist-run spaces and private galleries in Australia.
