Henriette Kassay Schuster, Hermione Merry The White Hotel

Opening: Wednesday 22 February, 6-8pm Dates: 22 February-10 March 2012

‘The White Hotel’ is a screen-based, spatial installation exploring perception, focus, fragility of performance and the liminal zone. Informed by the histories of hypnosis, hysteria and the surrealist muse, the work explores the medialityof the performer as ‘recording machine’ to delve into the unknown and that which falls outside the real. Responding to text (The White Hotel by D M Thomas) and music (Don Giovanni), the artists administer self-hypnosis to evoke an unguarded self-portrait that does not know its own image. These images inhabit a pyramid, continuously materialising and evaporating in the labyrinth and mystery of the cerebral unknown.

Henriette Kassay-Schuster and Hermione Merry are Melbourne-based artists and have been collaborating and exhibiting since early 2011. Their work engages hybrid forms and seeks to physicalise the screen-based image, transforming the screen into a tri-dimensional cinematic world. Their work continues to examine the unknown, communication and liminality. Collaboratively they undertook dual international artist residencies in 2011 at Pistorius 142 and Taktkunstprojektraum in Berlin where their work was exhibited. They will be participating in the 2012 Innovators Program at Linden Centre of Contemporary Art (June 2012).
