Emily Greenwood Trolley Herder Project

Emily Greenwood’s ‘Trolley Herder Project’ maps the unseen labour and extended movements of retail workers tasked with collecting and re-arranging discarded shopping trolleys. Memory and institutional encounter underpin three video works, each documenting a distinct act of trolley herding as they play simultaneously across the space. The formative Ashfield Mall performance (2022), the extended journey between Broadway Shopping Centre and Verge Gallery (2024), and a newly conceived return to the streets of Brunswick will be brought to the walls of gallery one over the next three months, quietly celebrating the gentle choreography of retail work. A found trolley and a single speaker anchor the installation, extending the videos into sculptural presence and sonic atmosphere.
Emily Greenwood is a mixed-Tongan, multidisciplinary artist and underground writer living on Dharug land. Their work explores themes involving intergenerational trauma, loss of culture and classism. They use their practice as a vehicle to explore the intersections between Eurocentric and Pasifika art histories and theories through their practice of cultural appropriation and adaptation. Their most significant work to date is their self- written, produced and published intersectional feminist zine ‘GRRL ZINE’. Emily recognises their Wiradjuri matrilineal ancestry and is privileged to have spent their formative years on unceded Burramattagal land.
