John Brooks Upward Beyond the Onstreaming it Mooned

Opening: Wednesday 10 June, 6-8pm Dates: 10 – 27 June 2015

Drawing from Borges’ short story Tlön, Uqbar, Orbius Tertius, projection and screen based video is merged with cast and woven soft sculptural objects in an exploration of the friction between objects in space and acts unfolding in time. Tlön is a metafictional planet in which misplaced objects can be replicated, nouns are replaced by verbs and suffixes and the material world is accepted as a delusion of the mind, favouring the temporal over the spatial.

Despite the existence of this planet being completely fabricated, artefacts from Tlön begin to show up on Earth. Mysterious objects forged in otherworldly materials are unable to be explained, shifting Earth’s reality into that of Tlön. Digital reproductions of crudely augmented natural processes signifying the passing of time are countered and combined with static, repetitious material objects, reflecting and contradicting the notion of the material world as a delusional facade.
